The science behind the headlines that have been telling us not to eat red meat is weak. First of all, studies saying that red meat causes cancer are merely observational with very low relative risk factors, to the tune of 20%. As I explain in this video, making observations is just step 1 of the scientific method, so no real experiment is being run here. And weak correlations certainly cannot be thought of as causation. In addition, red meat has been unfairly lumped in with processed meat, which does have chemicals that could detract from a person's health. Lastly, it is impossible in such observational studies to separate health outcomes for what would be a healthy meat eater compared to a person eating a Standard American Diet that includes meat. I hope that together this information will help people realize that it is OK to eat red meat. I believe a lot of people would benefit from having some red meat in their diets, that is, of course, if they also omit the junk food--buns, fries, soda, etc--that often come with eating red meat.
